  Can You Get DFd for Working for the Department of Defense?

  so, as some of you may be aware, i got a job offer with an agency under the u.s. department of defense.

  the other day i told a member of my family, and they nearly went apeshit.. my question: what reprecussions could this reasonably have?

  does the wts speak of this in any of their publications?

  It seems to me that there is no principled way of drawing a line. Working for the U.S. government supports the military. Is it a Quaker war mongering problem or a neutrality problem? Paying taxes to the government gives the government money to appropriate for the military. During Viet Nam, activists expanded the reasoning to key industries that supported the war effort.

  I don't see how one can get closer to a government than working for a State Department or Foreign Ministry.

  I know a physical therapist who was forced to quit his long-standing job at a Catholic hospital by the KH. He had nothing to do with medical decisions or policy or worship.

  this is a man who had cold callers coming to his home.

  at first nothing could be legaly done about it, but now it can and house holders now have a legal right to refuse cold callers coming to their home and by law this must be obeyed.. i wonder what impact this will have on the jw's and also their policy of calling once a year even if they have been told not to??

  Once they set foot on private property, I think they can be prosecuted. Maybe you need a warning sign. Deliveries are done by invitation. Peering into windows constitutes something much more serious. I'm not clear why they would track down someone who left.

  I never know what to do. When I threaten the police (and I would but they leave), I feel bad b/c I once did what they do. Public forums have First Amendment protection. Private property does not.

  Jesus' Physical Resurrection = Take the Ransom Back?

  in my "study," we have encountered the matter of whether or not jesus' physical body rose from the dead.

  i brought up a couple of scriptures that seem to indicate physical (john 2:18-22 and john 10:17,18).

  the jw's i am "studying" with explained how, although those verses may appear to indicate physical, jesus couldn't have meant that because if he physically rose from the dead, he would have taken back the ransom.. now that i know the wt reasoning on this, can someone point me to another source, link, book, article, etc.

  Does anyone have any nonWitness thoughts on why his closest followers don't recognize him post Resurrection? I'm not talking about being an eye witness. There must be a teaching witness for it to be included in the gospels. MDs say conversion and extreme grief can lead someone to believe a loved one is not dead. They are the opposite, after all the prophecies. I don't think there was much messianic consciousness until after the Resurrection.

  Thomas' being able to touch Jesus' wounds, in contrast to Magdalene, always touched me. I am doubting Thomas. Jesus did not condemn him for his disbelief. Perhaps Thomas was the sane one. Jesus assisted his faith. It wasn't have faith or perish.

  The apostles are so clueless and not awe-inspiring during his earthly ministry. These same characters are transformed into extraordinary martrys and visionaries in Paul and Acts. My personal feeling is that something actually happened during Pentecost. It is so observable I don't believe it is a coincidence. Maybe the apostles were made to look foolish to make Jesus look more awesome by comparison.

  This is weird. Somehow his resurrected body always gave me the spooks. I asked a priest about the interaction with Magdalene, perhaps some Witness thought was in my mind. He said John was theology, not fact. It was mostly to say not to hold on to departing/ed ones too long. He shrugged it off. I thought I was watching a weird sci fi film.

  As with so much else, their reasoning does not hold up. It is always absurd? Maybe I'm skewing it that way for my own reasons. Perhaps their plan of action is to set out a document that contains cherished doctrines and traditions. Maybe they poke them one a time. It seems these beliefs are adopted on the fly. If this all fits in some view, I don't see it. My experience was so bad that I can not be neutral.

  When I studied Nt, I concentrated in those subjects to which I had no prior exposure. My grade was excellent. Catholic friends wrote about Catholic doctrine, believing their study would give them a head start. Their grades were poor in marked contrast to other classes. It is hard for me to have distance even after decades out of the Witnesses. Typically, I almost wrote out of the truth.

  I just listened to Jesus Christ Superstar on my ipod. When it played in NY, I saw both productions. Why could I not take my thoughts and write a novel like Katzenzakis or a musical like Andrew Lloyd Weber and Tim Rice? At least I'd see some income from the aggravation,

  My larger point is that it is silly to assign 666 or 144,000 to God. Some of the imagery in Revelation is not feasible in any physical world we know. Anyone can find what they wish to read into it. It strikes me that the Witnesses assume that they are the only people to ponder these things. Everyone else was to pagan or hedonistic to do it. Yet I remember they commended William Tyndale, the English publisher of the Bible, who was fried to a crisp in Tudor times. He was NOT a Witness.

  I can understand uneducated people believing the Witness stance but the people who write the Witness literature are not unschooled. Joseph Smith's assertions regarding God's prophesies to him always struck me as bizarre and fantastic. Angels masquerading in upstate NY. Of course, we believed they masqueraded in Brooklyn. The egos of these people must be as big as Hitler's. The more I learned, the more I know only a mere fraction. Even if I have some expertise in my field, it must be tied to other fields. Christian humiliity is sorely lacking.

  Once you recgonize they have no authority , everything falls. I only learned today that Jesus was not bodily resurrected according to the JW. Yet they are far, from from Gnostic. The last thing a Gnostic would view as paradise would be trapped on earth in a physical body forever. Very strange. I fail to see any coherence or system in their beliefs.

  Following their doctrine is like watching a tennis game. The ball is constantly in motion and one must accomodate the new light. Were it not for its impact, I would just laugh.

  When does Christian martyrdom end for them? One day Christians fed to lions were great heroes, the next day, a great apostacy occurs and Christians fed to lions are devils. The lions probably found both examples tastey.

  My mom always used to ask why Israelites were so heartless. Exodus with Charlton Heston and voila back to worshipping idols in one day. In my day, even after Armageddon people would fall away. Manson had insights and revelations, too.

  Ive tried so many times to understand relativity and Shroeder's cat. Within the past two years, I read a major new biography of Einstein. I can't recall the author. I understood more than I did before reading the bk. Hawkings' bk is a class. One should almost read b/c everyone else reads it. The New York Times is similar.

  How long would the telephone conversation take? Senior thesis writing is different from a doctoral dissertation. Strange as it may seem, grad students do learn more content, even in poli sci.

  Are you defining a love of order and deference to authority as conservative?

  I, too, found the questions rather awkward but what the heck. A student paper is credit for a course not a large project. When I wrote my thesis, my biggest problem was picking a topic. There was not much supervision where I attended school. It was your responsibility. I lingered for an entire semester then wrote it all in the next. I received high honors. Unknown to me, the chair of the dept wanted to flunk me for not completing my work the first semester. Several of my professors assured him I would finish it on time. Now I don't know whether I received honors b/c of departmental politics or whether I merited it.

  Two weeks of law school trained me to think in a different fashion. I could go back to all my college courses and receive much better grades.

  I'm curious as to what you plan to do with poli sci? Politics, teach, law, government work? I wish you the best.

  My gut tells me he is right but my intellect and American values suggest that he is on a slippery slope towards religious persecution. It is a true conundrum. Anglo-American values should cherish equal rights for women and a belief in brotherhood. Susan Brownmiller's book on rape, Against Our Will, woke me up to a double standard for black and white conduct in America. I lived in NY and was frequently on the subways. My blonde hair made me a magnet for unwanted lechery, touching, perhaps worse. I felt hopeless. If the perp were white, I'd call the police. If the perp were black, I felt I had to suffer to atone for slavery. It made me say enough. I was much happier screaming at them, ordering them that a step further and th epolice would find them. I no longer accepted crap.
